President's FY 2009 Office of Science Budget Request 

The total Office of Science budget request for FY 2008 is $4.72 Billion (B) representing an increase of $748.8 Million (M) or 18.8 percent over the FY 2008 Appropriated amount of $3.97 Billion (B). This funding request will restore the Office of Science to the pace set forth by the America COMPETES Act of 2007 (P.L. 110-69).  Signed into law in August of 2007, this bill directed the Administration to double research within 10 years at key federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as the Department of Energy Office of Science (OS). 

Major program area investments include:

  • $805 million for High Energy Physics, an increase of 16.9 percent or $115 million above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • $510 million for Nuclear Physics, an increase of $77.3 million or 17.9 percent above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • $568.5 million for Biological and Environmental Research, an increase of $24.1 million or 4.4 percent above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • $1.56 billion for Basic Energy Sciences, an increase of $298 million or 23.5 percent above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • $493 million for the Fusion Energy Sciences program, an increase of $206 million or 72.1 percent above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • $214.5 million for the ITER fusion reactor project, which was did not recieve funding in the FY 2008;
  • $13.5 million for Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, an increase of $5.54 million above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount;
  • and $203.9 million for Science Program Direction, an increase of $26.1 million or 14.7 percent above the FY 2008 Appropriated amount.

    Department of Energy's Office of Science

    The Office of Science plays a major role in the government's support of basic scientific and engineering research, providing 40% of the total federal funding for research in the physical sciences.  It manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, advanced computing research, and materials and chemical sciences, and 10 of the national laboratories.  Fundamental science and energy research is critical to ensuring that the U.S. can maintain its vital innovation infrastructure in our competitive global economy and develop breakthrough new technologies that can enhance America's energy security.
